Discussion Questions for Disaster Preparedness (11/01/18)

  1. What are your thoughts and concerns when it comes to Disaster Preparedness?
  2. What can you do TODAY that would reduce the impact of a major disaster on your family?
  3. Will you be one of those people asking yourself: “Why didn’t I prepare before there was a disaster? Why didn’t I do an inventory”?

If you have the misfortune of experiencing a major loss, the time it takes to recover will be longer than you might think.  You will be worried about your immediate and longer-term future. You will probably have the following thoughts, and ask yourself the following questions:

  1. I’ve paid my homeowners insurance premiums for years. Will they reimburse me the full amount of my coverage, no questions asked, or are all those attorney commercials true? Will I have to fight my insurance company to get a fair reimbursement on my insurance claim?
  2. Will the insurance company pay the claims money in a timely manner.  Will my family and I be made whole quickly?  Will the reimbursement amount ensure our home and our possessions can be restored as they used to be?
  3. My home is destroyed and with it the inventory information I had. How in the world will I do an inventory of my house and my possessions for my insurance claim now?
  4. How will I care for my family, and where will we live?
  5. Is it true when I tell my insurance agent in frustration that, “I’m having difficulty completing my insurance claim because the documentation was destroyed in the disaster,” that the insurance company then knows you have little or no documentation, and that information, or the lack of detailed documentation on my insurance claim may result in a much smaller insurance claim reimbursement check?

A comparison of why you have life insurance and why you have homeowner’s insurance:

If you have life insurance and someone asked you “Why do you have life insurance?”, the answer would be obvious:  because you love your family and if the unexpected happened to you, you’d want to make sure your family is taken care of, and hopefully that they can maintain the same standard of living with the aid of the life insurance money. In fact, most homeowner’s know that there is no guaranty of tomorrow, and every day is a gift.

Well, the reason you have Homeowner’s Insurance is virtually the same.  But there is a catch with Homeoner’s Insurance.  Even though you have Homeoner’s Insurance, by not being prepared in advance and taking the necessary measures by having an inventory and appropriate documentation, you may get a substantially lower insurance claim award and allow a real mess to result for you and your family. If you have a major loss, do you want them to maintain the same standard of living, too? Hopefully you will survive the Hurricane or disaster, but then to consider  a worst case scenario: Is that how you would like to be remembered?

The bottom line is: If you have a major loss and everyone is fine, do you want your family to endure a mess, and if you are injured or worse, do you want to leave a Legacy or a Tragedy?

Also, when faced with a major loss you will certainly be in a hurry to file a complete and comprehensive claim with your insurance carrier as soon as possible. In some cases, however, due to the destruction and dangers caused by the disaster, the area may be quarantined and you won’t be able to get to your home. In other cases, there is no home left to inventory!

Without considering the consequences in advance, your ability to respond to a tragic event like this could be overwhelming! The stress of perhaps the most significant trauma in your life could make the enormous task of providing a detailed inventory with the information and documentation required by the insurance company daunting and challenging. Perhaps you know someone who experienced a total loss and had little or no evidence of exactly what was in their once beautiful home.  Perhaps you witnessed how they were so overwhelmed they just broke down and cried!

And it might surprise you to learn the fact that some people were only paid 10 cents on the dollar for the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy and other storms.  Some individuals who suffered $100,000 in damages were only reimbursed $10,000 by their insurance company.  That’s an unbelievable loss of $90,000 of the value of their home and possessions! And some people are still fighting with their insurance companies to be reimbursed for their losses.  Consider how such a loss would affect your family.

Consider that many otherwise minor details now become major issues:

You need shot records, medical records, medical prescription and refill information, and eyeglass prescriptions, if replacements must be remade. You may need a copy of your Will or Trust, or that of a family member, as well as other important information like contact numbers and account numbers for insurance policies, bank accounts, and credit cards.  Perhaps you will need to seek refuge in a shelter, and you plan on bringing your pet with you. You may need your pet’s shot and medical records.

Many families that have experienced this type of tragedy have lamented that all their records and receipts, and all the pictures and videos of their property were destroyed in the disaster!  Many victims have had to file claims that were significantly incomplete. Sadly, they ultimately received a drastically reduced insurance reimbursement check because without the aid of seeing their home “the way it used to be”, they didn’t have the photos and proof of their possessions. In many cases they just couldn’t remember everything that was in their home or business before it was destroyed.

About the Founder

iINVENTORYpro.com was created and developed by a United States Naval Academy graduate and 20-year military Veteran, utilizing the security training and skills taught to him in the service of our great nation and for our great nation; a Veteran with a heart for giving and a passion for protecting families all over America and the free world.

As a child, his family’s home and its contents were severely damaged by a major interior house fire. He witnessed his mother cry the day of the fire, and more disturbingly, cry the day she received the pitifully small insurance claim payment check. Because of insufficient documentation, the insurance payment was considerably less than what was needed to repair the home, and repair and replace the damaged furniture. His family was not only forced to live in a tiny and uncomfortable apartment for over a year, but because they didn’t have a detailed home inventory and supporting documentation, they had to scrimp and save for that entire year to be able to pay out of pocket for the repairs that allowed them to return to their home! And because of this painful memory, iINVENTORYpro.com’s founder is passionate about helping others who could potentially find themselves in a similar situation.  He doesn’t want something like this to ever happen to anyone again: not to you, not to another little boy like himself, nor to any family. Let iINVENTORYpro.com help you by quickly and inexpensively preparing you for whatever unexpected events you and your family may face in the future.
